Project Update – December 2025
About the SSTS Project
The SSTS project is a national initiative led by RANZCO in collaboration with RANZCOG, RANZCR, RACMA, RACS and CICM. Together, the consortium aims to strengthen medical supervision across diverse training environments through structured, contextually relevant learning modules that prioritise cultural safety and improve access to training in rural and remote areas.

The SSTS Pilot
Between May and July, a national pilot of the newly developed training resources was launched. The pilot included representation from 13 medical colleges; this excellent outcome reflects the breadth of engagement and commitment across the sector.

Pilot Feedback

Feedback from supervisors received during the national pilot was extensive and invaluable, highlighting opportunities to make the modules more authentic, engaging and contextually relevant.
Key themes included reducing perceived repetition, improving scenario distinctiveness and ensuring supervisory expectations were realistic and practice-based.

Extension of Project Timelines
Because of the breadth of feedback and the importance of expert review, the SSTS Steering Group and the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing have approved the extension of the project timeline by six months. This additional time will ensure the redesigned modules meet the highest standards of relevance, realism and educational coherence across the entire Medical Supervisor Curriculum.
Actions to Address Feedback
To address these findings, the SSTS team initiated a comprehensive module redesign. This includes introducing a multi-template learning design framework, replacing the previous single-template structure. Each template reflects a distinct instructional emphasis, from reflection and problem-solving to dialogue-based learning, ensuring modules remain varied while maintaining consistent learning outcomes.

Text-heavy content is being transformed into dialogue-driven scenarios between supervisors and learners, supported by GenAI-generated voice narration to create a more immersive and realistic experience. This approach strengthens narrative flow and improves accessibility across diverse learning settings, including rural and remote areas, while embedding cultural safety principles.

Next Steps
The first seven rural stream storyboards have now been completed and are under expert review, a significant milestone in the redesign process. Work is progressing on the remote and metropolitan streams using the same iterative, feedback-informed approach.

Upcoming Consortium Meetings

The SSTS Working Group will hold its final meeting for 2025 on 16 December 2025, and a face-to-face meeting has been planned for the Steering Group to sign off on the resources in April 2026.

Thank YOU!
The SSTS Project Team would like to thank the consortium representatives for their engagement, responsiveness and commitment throughout 2025, and for adapting swiftly when changes were required.
